How Do I Prepare for an iOS Interview?
Every year, thousands of iOS developers begin preparing for technical interviews. Some have been made redundant and are searching for their next role. Others simply want to see what opportunities exist elsewhere. Whatever the reason, most people begin in exactly the same place: they open Google and search for "iOS interview questions."
The results are usually overwhelming. There are websites containing hundreds of interview questions, lengthy YouTube playlists, algorithm challenges, blog posts and documentation covering every corner of the Swift language. It doesn't take long before the amount of material becomes intimidating, and rather than feeling more prepared, many developers begin to wonder where they should even start.
The good news is that interview preparation doesn't need to be that complicated.
If somebody asked me how I would prepare for an iOS interview, there are three things I would recommend. None of them involve trying to memorise hundreds of interview questions. Instead, they focus on rebuilding confidence in the technical skills you've already spent years developing.
The First Thing I'd Recommend Is Writing Down Everything You Think You Could Be Asked
Before opening Xcode or reading Apple's documentation, I'd recommend sitting down with a notebook or a blank document and writing down every interview topic you think you could reasonably be asked about.
Your list will probably begin with familiar subjects such as Functions, Optionals, Protocols, Extensions, Access Control, ARC, Closures, Generics and Error Handling. Before long you'll probably be adding more modern topics such as Swift Concurrency, Actors, Observation, Dependency Injection, SwiftUI, Networking, Testing and Value versus Reference Types. Don't worry about producing the perfect list. The important thing is getting everything out of your head and onto paper.
One of the biggest mistakes developers make is trying to keep all of these topics in their head. Swift begins to feel like one enormous subject that somehow needs revising all at once. Once you've written everything down, the task suddenly becomes much more manageable. Instead of thinking, "I need to revise Swift," you can simply decide that today you're revisiting ARC. Tomorrow you might spend an hour looking at closures, and the following day you might work through Swift Concurrency.
Small, focused revision sessions are much easier to sustain than trying to revise an entire programming language in one sitting.
Over the years, I've noticed something interesting. Most experienced developers aren't learning these concepts for the first time. They're reconnecting with ideas they already understand but haven't discussed in depth for a while. You probably know what a protocol is. You simply haven't explained one during an interview for several years. The same is true of ARC, access control and many other parts of the language. Interview preparation is often an exercise in remembering rather than learning.

Used well, it can make developers dramatically more productive.
Despite these advantages, I still believe there is enormous value in regularly sitting down and writing Swift yourself. Technical interviews are designed to understand how you approach problems, communicate your reasoning and arrive at solutions. Those are skills that improve through practice, and there is still no substitute for opening Xcode and working through problems under your own steam.
One exercise I'd strongly recommend is opening a completely blank Xcode Playground and giving yourself a small problem to solve. Perhaps you implement a custom networking client. Perhaps you build a cache. Perhaps you recreate an interview question from memory. Whatever the exercise, resist the temptation to immediately ask AI for the solution. Spend some time thinking, experimenting and allowing yourself to make mistakes before seeking assistance.
When you become stuck, read the compiler errors carefully. Try a different approach. Delete code that clearly isn't working and rewrite it. Observe how the behaviour changes. Those small moments of frustration are often where the deepest learning takes place because they force you to understand why your solution works rather than simply accepting somebody else's answer.
I don't believe AI is replacing programming. I think it is changing programming. The developers who benefit most from these tools will be the ones who continue strengthening their own understanding while allowing AI to accelerate the repetitive parts of the job. Strong Swift fundamentals and modern AI tools complement each other remarkably well, and interview preparation is one of the best opportunities to strengthen both.
The Third Thing I'd Recommend Is Starting Conversations with Recruiters
One mistake I see developers make time and time again is believing they need to complete all of their preparation before speaking to recruiters.
Personally, I think that's the wrong way around.
If you're hoping to move into a new iOS role over the next few months, I'd recommend beginning conversations with recruiters who specialise in iOS development sooner rather than later. Not because you necessarily feel ready to interview, but because you want to understand the current market.
Recruiters often have a much clearer picture of what's happening than we do. They know which companies are hiring, which skills are currently in demand, what salary ranges are realistic and, perhaps most importantly, what technical interviews are beginning to focus on.
After speaking to a few recruiters, patterns usually begin to emerge. Perhaps every company is asking about Swift Concurrency. Perhaps system design interviews have become more common. Perhaps SwiftUI is now expected rather than optional. Whatever those trends happen to be, they immediately tell you where to focus your revision.
I also think developers sometimes place too much pressure on themselves before their first interview. They imagine they need to be perfectly prepared before they can begin applying for jobs. In reality, the first interview is often one of the most valuable parts of the preparation process.
Every interview teaches you something.
You'll discover which questions you answered confidently and which topics caused you to hesitate. You'll leave with a much better understanding of the areas that deserve more attention before the next interview.
Not every interview needs to result in a job offer. Sometimes its greatest value is simply showing you where you stand today.
Looking back over my own career, some of the most useful interview experiences were the ones that didn't lead to an offer. They exposed weaknesses in my understanding that I probably wouldn't have discovered otherwise, and they gave me a much clearer direction for my revision afterwards.
Interviewing is a skill in its own right. Like writing Swift, it improves through practice. The sooner you begin having those conversations, the sooner you'll begin improving.
